Preventing slips, trips, and falls on stairs

Benjamin Franklin famously said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  We tend to agree, especially when it comes to slips, trips, and falls, as they make up the majority of general industry accidents.  According to OSHA, slips, trips and falls account for 15% of all accidental deaths, just second to motor vehicle accidents.  They total 25% of reported general industry accident claims each year. In addition, over 17% of disabling occupational injuries result from falls.  Most could’ve been prevented.

Off-The-Job and Home Safety Hazards

It occurred to me recently that, as safety professionals, we often focus our attention only on workplace-related risks, hazards, and controls. While we certainly need to focus our attention on workplace safety, we must also remember that employees have lives outside of work. I’ve seen a number of employers who, with the help of safety professionals, provide their employees with information, presented both at meetings and in print, about safety at home.
