Thank you, Veterans.

On Tuesday, November 11, we honor those men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Veterans Day was first observed in the United States in 1919 when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. A year earlier, in November 1918, fighting between Germany and the Allied nations ceased when an armistice or temporary cessation of hostilities, went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, effectively ending World War I, also known as “The Great War.” The war wasn’t officially over, however, until June of 1919 when the Treaty of Versailles was signed.

In 1938, the U.S. Congress approved an act which made November 11 of each year a legal holiday. Armistice Day was to be a day dedicated to the cause of world peace and to honor World War I veterans. That changed, however, in 1954 when the name was officially changed to Veterans Day, a day to honor United States veterans of ALL wars.

West Bend Mutual Insurance Company thanks all of those veterans, those still with us and those who have gone before us, for the sacrifices they so willingly made for our country and our freedom.

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."
President Woodrow Wilson
