It takes all of us doing our part to reduce the risk of devastating wildfires. Neighborhoods in fire-prone areas continue to grow, making wildfire prevention even more critical. While it’s common to think of heavily forested areas as being at high risk for wildfires, desert communities can also be at risk.
Neighborhood expansion combined with the natural fuels that occur from wet winter growth creates an increased risk during the long, drier summers. Outdoor activities such as operating road grading equipment, building campfires, welding, and anything that causes a spark around growth and vegetation can lead to wildfires.
So, how can we help to prevent wildfires and keep our communities safe?
Here are some ideas that can reduce the risk:
Create a defensible space around your property.
Mow the grass and remove any weeds. Thin and prune trees and shrubs. Dispose of trash promptly. Keep flammable items such as propane tanks and firewood piles away from your home.
Maintain electrical safety.
Know where the electrical equipment is around your property, and ensure there’s no vegetation near the equipment.
Keep roof and gutters clear.
Check your roof and gutters regularly and remove any dead leaves, tree branches, or debris.
Monitor weather conditions before burning.
Check for restrictions, such as “No Burn Days,” and don’t burn when it’s extremely dry, windy, or when high winds are expected.
Extinguish campfires completely.
Reduce wood logs or burned material to ash and saturate the remaining ashes with water.
Report downed power lines.
If you see a downed power line, don’t go near it and report it to your local electrical company or authorities right away.
Educate yourself.
If you’re in a community that’s a part of a wildfire prevention program, sign up to get valuable tools and information to assist. One such program is FireWise, which is dedicated to helping homeowners learn how to live in a wildfire region.
Another valuable resource is the nationwide program called Ready, Set, Go! This program educates residents to take proactive measures before an emergency occurs. Follow the Ready, Set, Go! action plan to keep yourself and loved ones safe.
- Ready: Prepare now. Be aware of the hazards that may threaten your community. Take steps to prepare for seasonal wildfire concerns.
- Set: Be alert. Know there’s a significant danger in your area. Grab your emergency kit and be aware of the latest news regarding this event.
- Go: Evacuate. Danger in your area is imminent.
While the high temperatures, high winds, and droughts that occur in the warmer months can make communities susceptible to dangerous wildfires, we all have a role in preventing and preparing for fires. Stay informed about current conditions, take appropriate action, and help protect our neighborhoods and homes.
